Well ok not really. But I did go to an exhibit at the Science Museum (on museum lane) that is supposed to simulate what it feels like to play in an orchestra. I spent over an hour slowly making my way through the 6 rooms. Most looked like this:
So you could sit in the chair and look at the music – see when the person was going to play and kind of follow along. They had the violins, winds, brass, percussion, organ/celeste, and one room that had all the players and the conductor each on a screen in a circle above your head so you could watch them together. It also had a place where you could be the conductor – think x-box connect with dance-dance revolution, percussion demonstrations you could take part in, and a section with commentary from the musicians that you could read on screen or listen to in headphones. Very interesting, very unique, and very entertaining.
Oh and this is the Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen playing Gustav Holst’s The Planets.
